There are so many ways to let your mum feel the love on 9 May 2021 but it’s also good to know how this day came to be celebrated as Mother’s Day.

An American named Anna Jarvis was the founder of Mother’s Day. The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in May 1908 at St Andrews Methodist Church in West Virginia when Anna paid a tribute to her mother Ann Jarvis. Ann Jarvis was an American peace activist who nursed wounded soldiers in the American Civil War and founded Mother’s Day work clubs to solve public health issues. This Methodist Church is now the International Mother’s Day Shrine and is a National Historic Landmark. Three cheers for Anna Jarvis!.

A century later this tradition continues and thanks to Anna who created this special day for the matriarch in our lives.

As I celebrate Mother’s day, I begin to ponder about my own mother who was my inspiration. My mother was my first teacher. She taught me to identify her face from the others, the voices of my siblings, she taught me to smile, eat, drink from a cup, read, write, sing and cook. She is also the one who taught me spiritual values and my first prayers. Each time I recite my prayers, my mother’s voice rings in my ears because the prayers she taught me are the only prayers I recite. She taught me to be positive by being a positive force in everything that she did. This positivity shaped my thinking. She was the first one to comfort and support me in my early years and as long as she lived. I was blessed with a mother that put me before her own personal needs, nurtured me, gave me warm smiles, hugs, caring and unconditional love. She is the best person in this world and today if I am beautiful, it’s because she told me so. I dedicate this day for the most-kindest person in my life “my mum, my mother” because whatever I am today is because of my MOTHER. Thank you so much mum for everything that you were. I love you my mum, my angel in heaven.

While I cannot repay what my mum has done to me, I would like to say a thank you every day to my mum in heaven

I thank God every day for my mother. She cared enough to believe in me and never lost faith in me. I thank my mum for her wise advice on maintaining a positive attitude at all times.

I thank God every day for my mother. She did not call me a loser when I did not shine. She was my biggest supporter whether I got good grades or bad. She built my strength when my world was falling apart.

I thank God every day for my mother for those beautiful childhood experiences that shaped the life I have today. No matter how stupid I felt she always attached a positive label to my negativity.

I thank God every day for my mother. She instilled a philosophy in me called “everything is beautiful”. I thank God everyday for my mother for creating a powerful beginning of the rest of my life.

Even world leaders have expressed their love for their mothers. Here are a few of them that struck a chord:

“My mother made a brilliant impression upon my childhood life.  She shone for me like the evening star-I loved her dearly.”

Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955

“My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw.  All I am I owe to my mother.”

George Washington, First President of the United States from 1789 to 1797

“All that I am or hope to be I owe to my angel mother.  I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me.  They have clung to me all my life.”

Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States of America from 1861 until his assassination in 1865

To all the mums out there who have been a special part of my life, to all my sisters and my dear sister-in-law, to all my cousins, nieces, Aunties, all the grand-mums, to my friends who are mums, and to my friends who are going to be mums, I wish all of them a very happy “Mother’s Day”.

God bless from the team at Deliciously Indian
